CHAPTER FOURTEEN
CALEB SAT IN the emergency vet waiting room with a screaming kitten in a box on his lap, feeling decidedly out of place. He had zero experience with pets. When he was a kid, his dad had considered them a waste of money and food. Then he’d gone to college and was too busy to even consider getting a furry friend. Then he’d gotten married and Leah had said a dog would be great practice for having kids, only she’d never found a dog she liked. They were all too small or too big or smelly or the wrong breed. Which was probably for the best, really. He didn’t know that he could have stomached her complaints about the dog and how the walks it needed were ruining her life. Or hearing about how he never did his share.
Maybe he would have gotten out of the marriage sooner.
Maybe.
Getting out of his marriage, even though it was an unhappy one, was one of the hardest things he’d ever done. Wishing for ways that it could have been worse seemed like a fool’s regret—and all regret was foolish.
Better to focus on the present. And Beck. And the kitten mewing on his lap.
The lobby was nice. The chairs, which had plastic arms and padded seats, were decently comfortable. They reminded him of the ones in his doctor’s waiting room. There were magazines he liked and the paper he wrote for. The fish tank was amazing.
But being at the emergency vet was one of those times where he missed having someone else in his life. With Leah, this could be one of those situations they either excelled at as a couple or crashed and burned. But even with the risk of crashing and burning, she would have been a person to sit next to.
A vision in black and dark denim sliding in through the door caught his attention. Beck sailed over to him in heels that made her legs look a million miles long and jeans that hugged her legs, making him wish for a better angle. Beck had great thighs. He could spend hours between them.
“Hey,” he said, holding on to his box and making to stand up when she waved the movement away and bent down to kiss his check. The top of her button-down was just an enticement. Without a cat on his lap, he would be able to see straight down to her navel. Tonight, he’d kiss that navel.
Then she sat down next to him and reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze and he stopped thinking about sex and started thinking about how nice it was that she was here for him. Reliable. This is what was meant by the word, showing up for the important things. Being present. He’d bet Beck was awesome at showing up.
She was here now.
“You okay?” she asked, not letting go of his hand.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah. I think the cat’s okay. And it’s not really my cat. I just found it. If it’s not okay, it’s not like I’ll have lost a pet.
